The First Born | By: Ms. Maima Dukuly

Project Change

She’s well known as the firstborn, a beam of liberty on the West African shore. A land of promise, whispered in the wind, where freed slaves returned, baring the seeds of hope and the dream of a new beginning. The Lone Star, a symbol of their aspirations, blossoms in the sky above, a testament to their courage, resilience, and their unwavering belief in self-determination.

Gold, they said, laid beneath the earth where they walk, and iron ore flowed like the vital force of the land. Riches discovered, but for the usage of strangers from a far away land, to flourish off our gains.

Within this time a nation was born, cradled in the arms of the Atlantic, bringing across the world  a testament to the enduring spirit of freedom. But war, like the relentless waves crashing against the coast, shattered the dreams of Africa’s first child, her dreams to grow and develop beyond the imagination of any man, leaving behind a remnant of hardship and struggle for her own children and grandchildren to face.

The voices of abundance faded, replaced by the cries of want. The promise of abundance turned to a constant cry for help. The iron ore, once a symbol of productivity, became a reminder of what they lost, of a nation's riches left unused, a legacy betrayed by its people.

The firstborn, once so full of life, now struggles with the weight of generations of hardships. The laughter of children was washed with the knowledge of hardship. The eyes of the elders, filled with stories of the past, also held a glimmer of hope, a yearning for a brighter future. For even in the midst of struggle, the spirit of the firstborn remained, unbroken, resilient, resting on the shoulders of the youth, like the war bundles of their forefathers, both a burden and a legacy.

The only difference is what they now carry: hope for tomorrow and strength to persevere through the hardship. Like a candle in the darkness, it flickers like a slowly rising flame, waiting for the moment to burst forth, to reclaim the promise of the past, and to finally, truly, fulfill the destiny of the firstborn.
